PEN15 Spec Script

For my FILM 348 Comedy Spec Script class at SCAD our professor, Dan Rosen, had us create a spec season for the Hulu Original, PEN15. Going into it, I had seen the first season of PEN15 before and greatly enjoyed the show so it was very fun to explore more of that world. The majority of the class was spent learning about analyzing dialogue and tone in order to write a spec that would hold up to the original show. As our final assignment, we each had to write our own episode within our class' Spec Season.

As a mock writers room we came up with a rough outline of where we wanted the season to go and major plot points. We always knew from the very beginning that it would be a season following Anna and Maya through the summer before 8th grade and that the final episode would end in the first week of school, on September 11, 2001. Yes, we planned to end this heartfelt coming-of-age comedy season with the tragedy of 9/11. So when I volunteered to write the season finale, I knew I would have to write it in a fun but respectful way that wasn't overly focused on the darkness of that fateful day.

My season finale spec script follows Maya as she goes on her first date with Sam. When Maya's Mom forces her older brother, Shuji, to chaperone, Maya drags Anna along to keep him distracted. However, Anna's longtime crush and Shuji's flirty nature drive Maya up the wall and in her attempts to stop their canoodling she ruins her date with Sam. This results in catastrophic fight between Anna, Maya and Sam that seems unsolvable until tragedy strikes the country.
